Background of the study
This study examines the effectiveness of multimodal communication strategies in Nigerian Pidgin translation projects. Multimodal translation involves the use of various modes—such as text, visuals, audio, and interactive elements—to convey meaning more comprehensively (Ibrahim, 2023). Nigerian Pidgin, known for its rich colloquial expressions and dynamic nature, is increasingly used in digital content, social media, and advertising. Translators often face the challenge of conveying not only the literal meaning but also the cultural and emotional context embedded in the source material. By integrating visual aids, audio elements, and contextual notes, multimodal approaches can enhance comprehension and audience engagement. This study collects data through content analysis of multimodal translation projects, surveys of audience responses, and interviews with translation professionals. The research aims to evaluate how these strategies improve translation accuracy and cultural resonance, and whether they can bridge the gap between traditional text-based translations and modern, interactive media formats (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although multimodal communication offers potential benefits for Nigerian Pidgin translations, its effectiveness remains underexplored. Challenges include ensuring consistency across different modes and integrating visual and auditory cues without overwhelming the textual message (Ibrahim, 2024). These issues can lead to fragmented communication and reduced clarity in the final product. Moreover, there is limited empirical data on audience reception and comprehension of multimodal translations. This study seeks to address these challenges by identifying the factors that hinder or enhance the effectiveness of multimodal strategies in Nigerian Pidgin translation projects, ultimately aiming to develop best practices for their implementation.
Objectives of the study:
To assess current multimodal communication strategies in Nigerian Pidgin translation.
To identify challenges and benefits of multimodal approaches.
To propose best practices for effective multimodal translation.
Research questions:
What multimodal techniques are used in Nigerian Pidgin translation?
What challenges affect the integration of multiple modes?
How can these strategies be optimized for better audience engagement?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates multimodal strategies in Nigerian Pidgin translation, offering insights to enhance communication effectiveness in digital media and advertising. The findings will guide translators, content creators, and media professionals in developing more engaging and culturally resonant translation projects (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to analyzing multimodal translation projects in Nigerian Pidgin, focusing on digital and advertising content without extending to other language services.
Definitions of terms:
Multimodal communication: The use of multiple modes (text, visuals, audio) to convey information.
Translation projects: Initiatives that convert content from one language to another.
Cultural resonance: The degree to which content reflects and connects with cultural values.
